Post release we caught up with the star and he spoke about the film’s performances, his issues with the CBFC and much more…
Tusshar Kapoor is on a high with two films, Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 and Mastizaade, releasing last month. But the actor didn’t promote the latter and isn’t apologetic about it either.Post the release of the film, we caught up with the star and this is what he had to say about both the film’s performances at the box office, his issues with the Central Board of Film Certification, films to look out for in 2016, Priyanka Chopra and more.
Two film of yours, Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 and Mastizaade, released last month. How happy are you with the response to both the film?
Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 has done decent business considering that it faced opposition from Airlift. Our film had been butchered by the CBFC too, but it still still has held its own audience and we guess, KKHH3 will make Rs 30 plus crores. We have made the film at a low budget, so at the worst it will at least recover the money.
Do you think KKHH3 lost out on money because Mastizaade released only a week later?
No, I don’t think we lost out because of that. We lost out because people went to see the movie expecting some sexual innuendos, but they were very far and few in between because they have been removed by the CBFC. We had to make some voluntary cuts and re-submit several times, that process took away all the masala. We didn’t have any opposition from any other film except Airlift which took away a lot of our multiplex office through the week and it kept growing. It also had a strong word of mouth, so we faced stiff competition from them. The audience also felt li’l underwhelmed because this was like a normal comedy rather than a Kyaa Kool kind of a film. All the jokes and spoofs were incomplete coz of the cuts made, so the audience found the jokes very choppy and abrupt, that is what happened. People felt cheated when they saw the film.
The film was decently film made, but when you don’t have the adult humour, why will the audience appreciate it. Airlift also took over, it’s a great film, and I guess that’s what happened. However, I have no regrets as we could not have done anything about it. This is a system and we had to go by it.
What about Mastizaade?
I’ve had a huge problem with Mastizaade and I don’t want to speak about it. I have not promoted the film too, so I am not responsible for the outcome.
Would you like to dwelve into the details of the problem?
I’ve never had a problem with any producer in my life, so the problem is not driven by me and hence I don’t want to talk about it.
Any plans of another Kyaa Kool Hai Hum film?
We will obviously come back with another Kyaa Kool Hain Hum film in a couple of years. The franchise is still in people’s mind, so they will always come back to watch it and I hope the next one lives up to the expectations.
But with the ongoing CBFC issue, would you like to be a part of a sex comedy again?
Right now, no way! Till censorship becomes certification only, I will not do a sex comedy again.
Talking about CBFC again, if you have heard then Aligarh‘s trailer got an A certificate when they tried to release the promo, but a film like Ishq Junoon which has an nearly pornographic song has been left out. Would you like to comment?
I don’t know about this, but they have reasons for everything. I wouldn’t like to comment on that, but Aligarh seems like a great movie and I would love to see it.
What are your plans for your production house?
Right now, it is at a very initial stage. I am already working on something. But till it’s signed, I cannot even talk about it. With production, things change every time. Nothing has been locked, so no point talking about it.
Looking back at the start of 2016, what do you expect the year to be?
It will be a very exciting year I guess. I am hearing some very interesting scripts, so I hope that there are some interesting films that I can come out with. I am also looking forward to some very interesting films that the fraternity brings out.
Which films are you looking out for in 2016?
I saw Joy and Room recently and I am looking forward to watch The Revenant and Spotlight. Talking about Bollywood films, I am looking forward to watch Dangal, Sultan, Fan, Azhar and Udta Punjab.
Oscars are coming up in a few days and Priyanka will be presenting an award. How does it feel seeing a Bollywood actress go to America, win so many awards and even present an Oscar?
Priyanka Chopra is definitely an inspiration. She’s changed the rules of the game and she has made things possible for an actress, which were never possible earlier. An actress in her thirties is limited, but Priyanka has broken the rules, changed the rules and broken the barriers. She is not just an inspiration to women, but also to guys. She has proved that nothing is impossible and you have to keep fighting. She has stuck it out from good times, bad times and come out with flying colours. She hasn’t had things on the platter from the beginning, she has worked her way to this position where she is currently. She deserves an applause.
